Traveling as a nurse can present mental challenges. There is the anxiety associated with change, the challenge of adapting to new cities and facilities, and possibly a bit of loneliness as well. Being mentally prepared for your next assignment can go a long way toward reducing your stress level.

Get Organized

Staying organized will help make your adjustment to your new location much easier. Consider making a list of things such as housing, work documents, uniforms, and other items that you will need for the job. Planning apps such as Notion, Trello, and Google Calendar can help you organize your orientation dates, schedule, contacts, and personal tasks.

It helps to organize your short-term living space as soon as you can by using bins and organizers to keep things straight. Be sure to label and file both physical and digital copies of crucial documents such as your license, contract, health records, and orientation literature. Set aside a bag that is ready to go at all times and includes your ID badge, pens, notebook, phone charger, snacks, hand sanitizer, and possibly a cheat sheet for work.

Stay in touch with your recruiter for questions and to help you handle any unexpected issues.

Stress Reduction

There are many stressors associated with travel nursing that can affect your mental well-being. You will need some strategies to help you be mentally prepared. To keep your stress level low, be sure to clarify your job expectations. Begin with your recruiter and ask questions about the facility, workload, and culture of the workplace. Speaking with a current nurse at the facility and gaining an understanding of expectations can ease your anxiety about the place.

Work out your housing arrangements early. Housing not included? Use apps, reviews, and maps to help you search for a place. Finding a place to live early on can remove one of the most significant stressors of travel nursing.

Packing for your trip does not have to be complicated and stressful. Keep a packing list handy so nothing is forgotten. Keep it light. A capsule wardrobe and travel-sized supplies are wise choices. Can’t fit it all in your bags? Ship some items ahead of you in advance if it helps reduce your packing stress. Don’t forget an emergency fund in case of delayed payment or your housing is more than expected.

A Smooth Transition

A routine to follow once you arrive will give you a sense of consistency in your new location. Take some time to explore your new location. Not only will you get to take in the sights and sounds of an exciting new place, but the familiarity of the place will reduce stress. Make an effort to get to know your new coworkers. By building relationships, you will feel integrated and supported at your new facility.
